The Critical Designer.

Dressed to kill.

Scuderia Ferrari team shirt – 2019.
In case you didn't know already, I am quite a passionate motorsport fan, especially towards the world of Formula 1. To the majority of people, F1 is incredibly boring or uninteresting, but when you come to understand the technology, the team's histories, the stories behind the drivers and the sheer amount of effort that is made to be on the top step of the podium each weekend, it is a lot more interesting that you would ever expect. Bringing it into clothing is a lot easier than you would think too. This Ferrari shirt from 2019 was the first racing shirt I bought and ever since, I have been a pretty big Ferrari fan. Yes, it is a horrifically branded red shirt with the 'prancing horse' on, but to the passionate fans that wear them, it has a lot of meaning to them. The Ferrari community is mostly just a group of people who want the best for the most historical team on the grid that has somehow not one a championship since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. 2019 saw the first hope in years with the young Charles Leclerc fighting at the front of the pack with a Ferrari that just so happened to be deemed illegal at the end of the season. Nevertheless, the 'tifosi' around the world had a spark ignited  in them that hadn't been seen in a long time with the hope of a chance at the championship. That being said, we have just left 2022 still without a championship win, but they are looking strong for next year. Anyways, the person you see wearing a Scuderia Ferrari shirt in the near future isn't just wearing it to look fashionable, quite the opposite actually, instead they are likely wearing it because ease they have that deep down hope to see their team at the top of the tables, and to feel like a part of a community with some likeminded people.
At the end of the day, all 10 teams in F1 sell some pretty shocking clothing, but no one buys it to look good, they are not what you see in Next or H&M, they have a very specific target audience, and that is people who want to be apart of that teams community. It could be that on race day, you see people with matching shirts and you give each other a smile, sometimes even a passionate chat about that team, or in some instances, quite the opposite. For example, the end of the 2021 season saw a clear division between Mercedes fans and Red Bull fans because of how heated the season became, so there has been a lot of heated arguments with people wearing the opposing shirts. Thankfully with Ferrari, there has been no hope for a few years now meaning that no one really hates them, if anything, they want them to be back at the top of the table for some nostalgia, so there will always be a smile from random people on the street that clock that your wearing a Ferrari shirt as they know you have a lot of hope in something that has no hope whatsoever. There has been a saying with Ferrari fans which is "next year will be our year" – as said by Ferrari fans since 2007.
